Tequila may protect against obesity and diabetes according to researchers in Mexico who discovered that agave nectar found in the tequila plant may offer various health benefits. Their study showed that testing the agave on mice led to a reduction in food intake and weight and a decrease in blood glucose levels. Lissette Padilla and Mark Sovel discuss the perpetual benefits of drinking tequila, in this clip from the Lip News.
The video talks about three health benefits. Below, I have added a few more surprising benefits that are not mentioned in the video.
Tip: to get the benefits your tequila needs to have 100% blue agave. Avoid the rubbish chemicalized tequilas.
It can deal with pain – Drinking tequila has long been the Mexican remedy for aches and pains, and studies have proven that it can be an effective pain reliever. Not only does it help to dilate the blood vessels (leading to better blood flow), but it can help you to deal with tension, strains, and even mild headaches. We’re betting this is one of the less surprising health benefits of tequila to you.
It may help to prevent colds – Many Mexicans remember their parents mixing up a drink made from lime juice, tequila, and agave nectar as a means of warding off colds when the weather turns chilly. The mixture of Vitamin C and the agave nectar’s nutrients help to ward off colds, relieves sore throats, and reduces bacteria in the intestines.
No hangover – You may be skeptical, but the truth is that REAL tequila won’t give you a hangover. You may feel hung-over after drinking the watered-down stuff (anything with 51% tequila can be sold as “tequila”), but if you drink the real, 100% pure agave tequila, you won’t have to worry about the morning-after headache!
Osteoporosis – Tequila Could Fight Osteoporosis. An earlier study from 2010 (also performed by the ACS) shows that tequila contains fructans, or a type of non-digestible carbohydrate kept in reserve by the body. The ACS’s study showed that mice who ate more fructans with their food absorbed and retained more calcium, which is potentially exciting news for anyone who’s concerned about bone loss.
Stimulates appetite – A shot of tequila before lunch can stimulate appetite experts say. A shot after a big dinner can aid digestion. Drink a glass of water afterwards to get the full benefit.
May keep dementia at bay– Drinking between 8 and 14 alcoholic drinks per week may reduce the risk to getting dementia by 37% according to a U.S. study.
Sleep aid – Just one single shot (1 to 1.5 ounces) is all you need for a relaxing night’s sleep. Relaxation is one of the positive side effects of tequila drinking and can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
