15 Dangerous Food Additives That Are Killing You

15 Dangerous Food Additives That Are Killing You

6. Theobromine

This is an alkaloid that is frequently added to chocolate and the reason why chocolate can be toxic to dogs. It acts very much like caffeine. This additive is often found in cereal, bread, and sports drinks, to name a few. One study performed in Utah that was done between the years of 1983 and 1986, but not published until 1993, showed that this substance caused an increased risk of prostate cancer in men and a link to testicular cancer was shown in another study.

7. Propyl Gallate

This chemical is used to stop fats and oils from going rancid. You will find this in many foods that contain edible fats such as frozen pizza or sausage. Propyl gallate is linked to a greater risk of developing tumors in the body, including rare brain tumors, according to the National Toxicology Program. The European Food Safety Authority decided that the studies that have been done in the US to prove its safety are outdated and/or are poorly written. There is also incomplete data as to whether or not this chemical is a hormone disruptor or whether it has estrogenic compounds.

8. Aspartame

Aspartame is a well-known artificial sweetener, and it is found in many drinks, soft drinks, frozen, sugar-free desserts, gum and as individual packets. The June, 2009 issue of the “Clinical Journal of Pain” lists aspartame as a food trigger for migraine headaches, noting that many people are sensitive to it. The CSPI reports that aspartame can cause neurological problems, such as hallucinations, and that consumption of the artificial sweetener, over extended periods of time, increases cancer risks.

9. Olestra

Olestra is a fat substitute that has no calories and cannot be absorbed by the digestive system, so it simply passes through it. It is often used in potato chips and in place of other fats. While it may sound like a miracle additive, olestra often has a negative affect on the digestive system. Aside from digestive troubles, the CSPI reports that olestra can interfere with the body’s absorption of important compounds from plants such as lutein, lycopene and beta-carotene, all of which help protect the body from cancer and heart disease.

10. Food Coloring

Food colorings, such as Blue #1, Blue #2, Yellow #6 and Red #3, are used in numerous food products, such as sodas, baked goods and candy. The Center for Science in the Public Interest reports that all four of the food colorings have been found to contain cancer-causing properties.

11. Hexane

is actually a byproduct of gasoline manufacturing. It’s also earned itself the dubious reputation of being a neurotoxin and air pollutant. “Noxious” is a good word to sum up the stuff’s properties. But despite hexane’s obvious dangers to human health, the chemical is regularly used by soybean processors as a solvent. Soaking soybeans in hexane separates the beans’ oil from the protein, allowing nutrition bar and other food producers to pump their products full of soy nourishment.
The use of hexane in nutrition bars is bad enough, but what’s worse is that many bars’ producers use misleading labels like “all-natural” and “made with organic ingredients.” Consumers reach for a Clif, Luna, Mojo, Odwalla, Balance, or Zone Perfect Bar thinking that they’re purchasing a healthy, eco-friendly product.

12. Saccharin

Saccharin is another artificial sweetener, used as individual packets or in soft drinks. The CSPI states that, like other artificial sweeteners, it has been found to cause cancer in the urinary tract and bladder in rodents. Saccharin has also been found to cause cancer of the ovaries, as well as other organs, and increases the cancer-causing effects of other compounds.

13.  Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid is used as a food preservative. It prevents the growth of mold, yeast, and some bacteria. You’ll find it in jams, jelly, fruit juice, margarine, beer, pickled vegetables, soft drinks, mincemeat, and barbecue sauce
Possible side effects: asthma attacks, rashes, irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes, hyperactivity in children, neurological disorders.

14.  High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

High Fructose Corn Syrup is a liquid sweetener .You’ll find it in baked goods, breakfast cereals, cakes, candies, cookies, “fruit” drinks, ice cream, jam, salad dressings, soda pop, soups, and many other processed foods.
Possible side effects: elevated cholesterol, premature aging, obesity, insensitivity of insulin receptors to insulin.

15.  Yellow #5 (Tartrazine) and Yellow #6 (Sunset Yellow)

The second and third most common food colorings, respectively. Found in Cereal, pudding, bread mix, beverages like Kool aid and powdered lemonades aimed at children chips, cookies, and condiments .
Possible side effects:Several studies have linked both dyes to learning and concentration disorders in children, and there are piles of animal studies demonstrating potential risks such as kidney and intestinal tumors. One study found that mice fed high doses of sunset yellow had trouble righting themselves in water. The FDA does not view these as serious risks to humans.
