23 Foods Poisonous to Cats and Dogs and A Natural Antidote

1. Alcoholic Beverages: Any type of alcohol can be poisonous to your pet and aside from intoxication, can cause a coma or even death.

2. Apple Seeds: Can have varied effects on pets.

3. Apricot Pits: Can cause respiratory difficulties such as breathing, coughing and sneezing.

4. Cherry Pits: Can cause respiratory difficulties such as breathing, coughing and sneezing.

5. Candy containing the sweetener Xylitol: Can cause liver damage and even death.

6. Chocolate: Although pets should never have any type of chocolate, milk chocolate is not nearly as dangerous for animals as semi-sweet or unsweetened bakers chocolate. Chocolate poisoning can cause irregular heart rate and rhythm, restlessness, hyperactivity, diarrhea, vomiting, panting, muscle tremors, abdominal pain, bloody urine, increased body temperature, seizures, coma and possibly even death.

7. Coffee: Can result in increased breathing and heart rate, restlessness and affects the central nervous system.

8. Grapes: Large amounts of grapes can be poisonous to pets and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, lack of appetite and kidney damage.

9. Hops: May cause panting, elevated temperature, increased heart rate, seizures and possibly death.

10. Macadamia Nuts: Can cause vomiting, lethargy, hyperthermia, abdominal pain, stiff joints, lameness and tremors.

Warning about Xylitol in sugar free products. This is highly toxic to pets, so don’t leave any gum or sugar free sweets lying around. (I think we should all avoid sugar free substitutes by the way). 

Remedy to Cure Poisoning in Dogs

Always have active charcoal capsules on hand for pets. Feeding your dog active charcoal before going to the vets could save their lives (consult with your vet first before taking this action).  DO NOT USE CHARCOAL BRISQUETTE FOR BARBECUE!!! THEY CONTAIN KEROSENE? OR LIGHTER FLUID TO HELP WITH THE BURNING AND IS TOXIC TO INGEST OR EAT.
