5 Natural Hangover Cures for the Holiday Season
If you are feeling a little delicate after over indulging rich foods and copious amount of alcohol over the holiday season then here are 5 morning after remedies to put you back on track. Make sure you have one or more of these available to hand.
If you have your own hangover cure, please share it with us.
Coconut Water
Dehydration causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Drinking alcohol makes you want to go to toilet regularly because alcohol acts as a diuretic. Coconut water is rich in the minerals potassium and magnesium, which help your body to rehydrate more effectively than drinking just plain water. However as it contains calories it is not ideal as a complete replacement for your normal daily water consumption. I must say, I love coconut water for hydrating, it really does refresh the parts that other liquids cannot.
Ginger
Ginger has so many medicinal benefits, one of which is for an upset stomach. Finely chop or grate a piece of ginger around 2 inches long and pour over a pint of boiling water. Brew for about ten minutes then sip slowly. Your stomach will soon be calmed. I can vouch for this one!
Eggs
Eggs contain B Vitamins which can become depleted by drinking too much alcohol. Eating eggs in the morning will also help to get rid of the excess toxins left in the body by alcohol. Personally, I am not sure whether I could face eating eggs first thing in the morning but I must admit to the odd sausage sandwich! So healthy (not).
Artichoke
Artichoke is good for the liver and helps to produce bile. The compounds in artichoke help to reduce nausea, vomiting, intestinal spasms and gas. It is better to take the dried extract as this is more potent. I have not tried this one, but if you have, let me know if it works.
Bananas
Eating a banana will help to increase your blood sugar which is often very low when you wake up, particularly if you feel weak and shaky. Banana contains potassium which the body loses when you become dehydrated. Eating a banana will help with any cramps, nausea or sickness. I have not tried this for a hangover cure, but have eaten bananas when I need a boost in energy.
