‘My own family said my skin put them off their food’: Woman was left feeling ‘like a leper’ because of psoriasis – until she found a herbal cream that helped
- Heather McKensie developed psoriasis in reaction to the trauma of a crash
- Began having flare ups in which 70% of her skin was blistered and red
- Dermatologist said it was the worst case she’d seen in her career
- Developed depression in her 30s and refused to leave the house
- Tried medications and treatments but nothing worked long term
- Finally found a cream containing Oregon Grape Root which helped
- Wore a bikini on holiday for the first time and is now engaged
Heather McKensie, from London, said her appearance so unsightly that her own sister refused to sit next to her at Christmas, believing the sight of her skin would put her off her food
The now 39-year-old developed the condition after being involved in a near-fatal car crash when she was 20.
She soon began having frequent flare-ups, where 70 per cent of her body would be blistered and her face was ‘one huge red blistered scab’.
Within two months of applying the cream daily, Ms McKensie claims she saw a 50 per cent improvement in her skin. While she still has small patches, the psoriasis doesn’t rule her life, she says
As a result, she stopped wearing swimming costumes altogether after overhearing a woman ask a lifeguard not to let her into a public swimming pool.
She also refused to attend her fiance’s friends’ weddings as her skin would be on show.
Over the years she tried various medications and treatments to try and make her condition better, but nothing seemed to work, so she gave up for fear of the potential side effects.
Ten months ago saw an advert for an Oregon Grape Root cream which claimed to help with psoriasis, and decided to give it a try.
Within two months of using the cream daily, she claims she saw a 50 per cent improvement in her skin, and, after six months, people started commenting on how well she looked.
