Nose bleed Facts
- The nose has numerous blood vessels, and this is the reason nosebleeds are very common. Nose bleeds can occur due to various causes such as injury due to picking the nose also known as digital trauma, physical injury, and dried-up nasal membrane.
- Some common causes of nosebleeds can be avoided and control the rate at which nose bleeds occur. Nasal dryness can be solved by properly lubricating the nasal passage, and digital trauma can be prevented by not picking the nose.
- Stopping nose bleeds most of the time can be done at home through simple home remedies and procedures. However, you may need to see a doctor if bleeding persist for a long time or you start feeling dizzy or faint.
- Unless otherwise advised by a physician avoid medications like aspirin that are blood thinning when experiencing nose bleeds.
Home remedies for stopping nose bleeds fast
1. Pinch your nose
The most obvious remedy to try first is to pinch your nose. Lean forward and pinch your nostrils where the flesh is softest. Do this for at least 10 minutes. Resist the urge to peek after just a few minutes. You need to allow at least ten minutes for the blood to clot. Repeat for another ten minutes if it has not stopped.
2. White vinegar
White vinegar is an excellent home remedy for nosebleeds due to its blood vessel sealing properties. In nose bleeding victims, white vinegar is poured into a piece of cotton wool or a piece of clean cloth. This cloth or cotton wool is then placed at the entrance of the nostril with nosebleed. White vinegar can seal blood vessels, and this makes nosebleeds stop instantly.
3. Ice
This is commonly used as a remedy for nosebleeds caused by injuries. Ice is useful for constricting blood vessels, and this reduces nose bleeds. Ice can also reduce inflammation that might have occurred during an injury. Ice particles in a bag covered with a towel are placed on the bridge of the nose until the nose bleed subsides. In cases where ice cubes are not available, frozen vegetables can perform the same job.
4. Brown paper sack
Surprisingly a brown paper works perfectly as a remedy for nosebleeds. Cut a small piece large enough to go under the top lip sticking into the gum. The effect of the brown paper will stop further nosebleeds, and nosebleed will stop.
5. Cayenne pepper
This acts as both a short and long-term remedy for nosebleeds. In case of a nosebleed take a teaspoonful of cayenne pepper and this will stop nose bleeds immediately. Chili pepper, red pepper, and Tabasco sauce perform the same work as cayenne pepper. After the nosebleed, you can continue taking pepper as this will strengthen blood vessels preventing further nosebleeds in future. This is due to the presence of vitamin C available in pepper that is useful for keeping blood vessel strong. Typically cayenne pepper is efficient in stopping all kind of bleeding even when directly poured into a bleeding wound.
6. Cold running water
Cold water is used in thickening blood, and thick blood is always easy to clot. In case of a nosebleed, right handed people should place the left arm in running water while left-handed people should put the right arm in the cold water. This is a rule of putting your weaker arm in the cold running water. The effect of cold water will thicken blood and in about three minutes blood will start clotting stopping the nose bleed.
7. Salt, vinegar, and lemon juice
This combination when deeply sniffed stops nosebleeds. One teaspoonful of salt is placed in a cup, and a little vinegar is added to dissolve the salt. Few squirts of lemon are added to the mixture. Place this mixture at the entrance of nostrils and then sniff the mixture. Sniffing this mixture will automatically stop nose bleeds immediately.
8. Freshly sliced onion
This remedy has been used since time in memorial, and it is common to date. The victim is advised to tilt his/her head backward, and sliced onion is placed under nostrils. Sliced onion has always worked as a coagulant and smell from onions works to stop further nose bleeds.
9. Gauze dressing
A gauze dressing is placed under the upper lip between the lip and gums. This remedy has been reported to stop a further nose bleed.
10. Vicks VapoRub
Dip a q-tip inside a VapoRub and rub it inside the nostrils.
Note: Do not tilt your head back. You may end up swallowing blood that runs down to the back of your throat. Spit out any blood that gathers in your mouth and throat rather than swallowing it or you may end up with a stomach ache or infection.
Preventing nose bleeds
Preventing nose bleeds in the long term can be done by addressing the cause. Vitamin deficiency being a probable cause of nose bleeds should be checked. Nose bleed victims are advised to improve their vitamin intake by eating green leafy vegetables rich in vitamin k. Vitamin k is necessary to help in clotting of blood.
Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is essential for the formation of collagen. This is a great way of preventing nosebleeds caused by nasal dryness. Blood vessels will not easily break and nose bleeds caused by digital trauma are easily avoided.
Drinking at least 8 glasses of water can be used as a long-term method of preventing nosebleeds. This will help counter harsh weather conditions like winter that leave the nasal passage dry causing frequent nose bleeds. In dry weather conditions taking more water will keep the nose moisturized at all times.
Nasal irrigation using salt is used by people with allergies to moisturize the nasal passage and clear mucus obstructing the nasal passage. Nasal irrigations involve a combination of salt, baking powder, and luke-warm water. For every one and a half cup of lukewarm water add a quarter teaspoonful of salt and a quarter teaspoonful of baking powder. Using a bulb syringe take the mixture and place it in the nostrils and then blow it out after some time. This process should be repeated until all the water is completely dried out from the nose.
Steam is also useful in treating nosebleeds. This can be steam from your morning coffee or steam from your cup of hot water.
