Jessica Alba Reveals Her Best Home Remedies
Under the weather? Feel better fast with Jessica Alba’s favorite all-natural cures, including the two she’s relied on since childhood.
Fever Fighter: If you have a temperature of over 100 degrees on the thermometer, Alba recommends this fever fix she uses on herself and her kids: “I soak a washcloth in cool water with a mix of ginger, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree oils and put it on their head,” she says. If you have left over ginger, sip it mixed with hot water to soothe any accompanying tummy aches.
All-Natural Vapor Rub: During cold and flu season, Alba slathers Honest Organic Breathe Easy Rub (The Honest Company, $9.95) on her chest, back and bottoms of her feet to keep her nasal passages clear. If she doesn’t have it on hand, she makes the remedy herself by mixing peppermint, ginger, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils with her Honest Healing Balm (The Honest Company, $13). In a pinch, coconut or olive oil work well as a base, too. Her husband, Cash Warren, and daughters Honor Marie, 6, and Haven Garner, 3, swear by the remedy, too. “It clears up their sinuses and sniffles and it smells so fresh,” Alba says.
Air purifier. The green-minded star keeps a high-efficiency particulate absorption (HEPA) filter in all her family’s bedrooms, including her own, where it’s connected to the main air-conditioning unit. These help remove harmful bacteria and allergens like dust mites, animal dander and mold from the air sans the need for chemicals. “Fresh air is one of the best resources I have for keeping my family healthy,” she says.
Plant-Based Healer: When Alba was little, her grandmother would always keep aloe plants to hand to treat the odd injury that came with the rough and tumble of the actor’s childhood years. “If there was a burn or a cut, or a scrape or anything, she would pop a leaf off the aloe plant and put the aloe slime on us,” she remembers. Turns out her granny was on to something: Aloe has been found to reduce inflammation in wounds and preliminary research suggests aloe may also be effective at helping heal skin burns.
Boo Boo Soother: The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, it seems, when Alba started The Honest Company because her grandma swore by yet another natural home remedy. Whenever Alba or her brother came crying after a fall, the matriarch would rub olive oil and sugar on their bumps as a healing technique. “I think it helped break up the blood clot when she would rub the oil on the bruise,” Alba says. “So it hurt at first, but then she’d pour sugar on it. It might not do anything, but it made us feel better!” Three cheers for that.
