5 Cool Ways To Boost Matcha Green Tea
If there’s a creative way to use Matcha green tea powder, we’ve found it. We’re sneaking the stuff into lattes, baked goods, and every breakfast imaginable (and sharing our matcha creations on Instagram!). Yes, the traditional Japanese drink tastes amazing (think slightly grassy, with a subtle earthy sweetness), but it’s also packed with antioxidants, can help rev up your metabolism, and is naturally rich in fiber. It’s also great when you’re feeling sluggish — one teaspoon of matcha can keep your energy levels up for hours.
Here’s how to boost the foods you know and love with the mean, green power of Matcha.
1. Yogurt + Matcha: Mix one teaspoon of Matcha into your favorite plain yogurt. Need it a little sweeter? Add a drizzle of honey.
2. Cereal + Matcha: Mix one teaspoon of Matcha into your milk of choice and pour over cereal.
3. Green Tea + Matcha: Want the health benefits of green tea but need a little more caffeine? This is for you. Pour hot (but not boiling!) water over a bag of green tea, let steep for 30 seconds, and mix in one teaspoon of Matcha.
4.Oatmeal + Matcha: Prepare oatmeal according to directions, then set aside. Whisk Matcha into your milk of choice, pour over oatmeal, and add nuts or fruit for an extra somethin’-somethin’.

5. Healthy buttercream: An oxymoron if there ever was one. We’re talking, basically, butter and powdered sugar. That said, I’ve been playing around with making healthier substitutes for powdered sugar – you can make a workable one using Sucanat! But alas, any wholesome sweetener is still going to have its nutrients intact, which means likely too much molasses-y flavor to play nicely with matcha. (Though I will keep working on this and update if magic should occur.) So for this recipe, use the most sustainable powdered sugar you can get your hands on, preferrably one that is organic and Fairtrade certified.
- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons matcha green tea powder
Add butter to a large bowl, add some sugar and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed, gradually adding in the sugar, add the tea powder in the middle, and be sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl often. Frosting may appear dry but then beat in the milk until it is smooth and of the consistency you like.
